Resume

In the Balearic Islands there has been a sharp decline in the use of reusable packaging in recent decades. Even in the HORECA sector, where some companies continue to offer drinks in reusable containers and where there is consolidated reverse logistics, they are losing market share to single-use containers. In shops, their offer is practically non-existent or anecdotal.

Interest in reusable packaging is increasing (especially due to the rising cost of raw materials and growing environmental awareness), and it is essential to promote meeting and working spaces to make contact, network, encourage and involve the different key players in a packaging reuse project.

Wine packaging is currently not reused in any of its distribution channels, not even in hotels, restaurants and caterings, as is the case in other beverage sectors, such as soft drinks or beer packaging. Moreover, the wine industry is one of the industries most affected by climate change, as the vineyard and the quality of the wine depends to a large extent on atmospheric conditions. This is why new techniques and strategies must be implemented to reduce the carbon footprint.

Collaboration

That is why Mallorca Preservation collaborates with Rezero in the reWINE project, which aims to support the circular economy by promoting the production and consumption of wine in returnable and reusable bottles in Mallorca. Since the island offers an ideal scenario for the development of reusable models, not only due to logistical, environmental and territorial issues, but also due to the current implementation of the Balearic Waste Law, which contemplates the possibility of incorporating Deposit and Return Systems for containers, which would help to incorporate the habit of returning containers to the shops.

20

kg of CO2 can be saved by reusing a glass bottle 8 times.

Goals

  • Supporting the circular economy by promoting the production and consumption of wine in returnable and reusable bottles in Mallorca.
  • Reducing the carbon footprint of transport.
  • Enhance the sustainability of local production in Mallorca.
